Johnson averaged 10.74 during the 1986-87 season and 13.3 the following season.
Senior center James Smith (Nyack, N.Y.) finished with 11 points, while junior forward Ben Farmer (Clinton, Conn.) had a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.
Rider was led by Jason Thompson's 22 points, while his brother Ryan Thompson had 16 points, Harris Mansell had 14 and Terrance Mouton had 12. Mansell's eight boards also led the way for the Broncs, while Lamar Johnson posted four assists and Ryan Thompson had four steals.
Marist outrebounded the Broncs 38-33, but Rider held a 23-6 edge in bench scoring.
The Red Foxes gradually pulled away in the first half, building a 13-point (42-29) lead with 41 seconds to go on Whittington's sixth three of the game. However, Jason Thompson's layup pulled Rider two points closer for the halftime margin of 11 points.
Marist tried valiantly to put the game out of reach in the second half, taking a lead of 15 points on four separate occasions, the last one coming at the 7:57 mark (66-51) on a layup by Jordan.
However, Rider screamed out on an 18-5 run over the next 5:04 to pull to within two on a 3-pointer by Mouton.
After Marist got another five points from Jordan and a pair of free throws from Farmer to go up seven (78-71) with 59 seconds left, Rider closed the gap again down the stretch. Eventually, Mouton hit a meaningless 3-pointer with one second left for the final margin.

Holy Cross Defeats Army
(West Point) – Keith Simmons scored a game-high 26 points and Torey Thomas chipped in 14 points and a game-high seven assists as Holy Cross survived a scare from Army, defeating the Black Knights in overtime, 70-54, Tuesday evening at Christl Arena.
Army (13-11, 3-6 Patriot League) led for the majority of the second half, but needed an acrobatic shot from Jarell Brown with 0.5 seconds left to send the contest to an extra session.
Holy Cross (19-6, 10-0 Patriot League) scored the first 12 points of overtime to assume a 64-52 advantage at the 1:17 mark. The Crusaders, who were a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor in overtime, outscored the Black Knights 18-2 in the extra session as they escaped West Point with the victory.
After Thomas knocked down a couple of free throws to begin the period, Simmons followed with a thunderous two-hand slam dunk and Tim Clifford connected on a three-pointer to put Holy Cross up by seven points at the 3:02 mark. A triple by Pat Doherty and a lay-up by Clifford capped the Crusaders’ scoring spurt, which all but ended Army’s upset bid.
Army head coach Jim Crews lauded the effort of his team.
“We did a lot of good things defensively,” mentioned Crews. “We got down 15-6 and our kids kept battling back. We were just one play away from getting away with (a win). I was pleased with the kids; I was disappointed with the outcome, but we’re fighting the right fight. We’ll keep fighting.”
The second half was an exciting 20 minutes of basketball, which featured three ties and five lead changes. Holy Cross led 22-21 at halftime, and the Crusaders quickly increased their lead to 26-21 within the first minute of the stanza. A 6-0 Army spurt gave the Black Knights their first lead of the second half at 27-26 with 13:45 to play.
After Holy Cross grabbed a 31-27 lead at the 13:06 mark, Josh Miller knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Brown scored seven points to fuel a 13-2 Army run that gave the Black Knights their largest lead of the game at 40-33 with 8:05 to play.
A 10-4 Crusader run trimmed Army’s lead to 44-43 at the 4:47 mark. After the teams traded baskets, Brown nailed a deep three-pointer with the shot clock running down to bump Army’s edge to 49-45 with just over three minutes to go.
Holy Cross battled back as Simmons converted a pair of free throws and then hit a lay-up as the Crusaders tied the score at 49-49 with 2:10 remaining.
Each team dropped in a free throw before Simmons connected on a short jumper with 15 seconds left to give Holy Cross its first lead since midway through the period, 52-50. On Army’s ensuing possession, Brown drove the lane and sank a tough running scoop shot just before time expired.
Like the second stanza, the first half included three ties and five lead changes. Army led 6-5 at the 14:32 mark, before a 10-0 Holy Cross run gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the half at 15-6 with 10:06 remaining to play before halftime.
Army outscored Holy Cross 15-5 over the next 9:43 to grab a brief 21-20 lead. The lead was short-lived as Thomas hit a jumper with seven seconds to play to give the Crusaders a tenuous 22-21 lead at intermission.
Army limited Holy Cross to 30.4 percent shooting from the floor in the opening half. The Crusaders connected on 50.0 percent of their shots in the second stanza and finished at 46.0 percent for the game.
Army hit 33.3 percent of its field goals. Holy Cross outrebounded Army, 37-26.
Brown paced Army with a team-high 21 points. Matt Bell added 12 markers, while Josh Miller chipped in a career-high 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Army will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 10, when the Black Knights travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh. Tip off from Stabler Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.

Army Edges Navy, 53-50
(West Point) - Matt Bell hit three three-pointers and scored a team-high 16 points to help lead the Army men’s basketball team past Navy, 53-50, in front of 3,904 spectators Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena. The victory, Army’s third in a row, ups the Black Knights’ record to 13-7 (3-2 Patriot League). Navy falls to 11-9 (1-4 Patriot League).
In the 105th meeting between the two rival service academies, Jarell Brown, Corban Bates and Doug Williams all added eight points apiece to help Army to its first 13-win season since the 1986-87 team compiled a final record of 14-15.
Williams, who produced a couple of rim-rattling dunks, added a career-high 10 rebounds for the Black Knights, who have reeled off three consecutive Patriot League victories for the first time since 1998-99 squad accomplished that feat.
“It was a hard-fought game, and I thought both teams played well defensively,” said Army head coach Jim Crews. “I thought Doug Williams did a great job defensively for us. He was instrumental in this victory. Our whole team stepped up today.”
Army, which led 25-23 at halftime, began the second half on a 12-4 run to open up a 37-27 advantage at the 14:47 mark. Bell scored eight of the Black Knights’ points during the spurt, which gave Army its largest lead of the game.
Three-pointers by T.J. Topercer, Adam Teague and Greg Sprink ignited an 11-0 Navy run that gave the Midshipmen their first lead of the second half at 38-37 with 9:34 to play.
The teams traded baskets until a conventional three-point play by Sprink gave Navy a 43-41 advantage at the 5:08 mark.
Army answered right back as Bates scored the Black Knights’ next six points, producing a conventional three-point play and hitting a three-pointer from the left corner to give Army a 47-43 lead that it would not relinquish.
After a couple of Sprink free throws made the score 47-45, Williams took an interior feed from Bates and threw down a slam dunk with the right hand to push Army's lead back up to four points at 49-45 with 2:38 showing on the clock.
After two free throws by Trey Stanton trimmed Army's lead to 49-47, Brown knocked down a jumper to put the Black Knights up 51-47. Navy was able to cut Army's lead to two points one last time at 52-50 after a three-pointer by Sprink with six seconds to go. A Bell free throw increased Army’s lead to 53-50 and Sprink’s three-point attempt from the left wing clanged off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
The first half was a back and forth affair that featured two ties and two lead changes. Cory Sinning scored Army’s first four points, helping the Black Knights to an 8-2 lead at the 13:36 mark.
Sprink jump-started Navy’s offense, scoring eight of the team’s points during a 15-6 scoring run that gave the Midshipmen a 17-14 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
Bell hit two three-pointers as Army answered with an 8-0 spurt of its own to regain the lead at 22-17 at the 2:33 mark. Navy battled back to tie the score at 23-23 with 51 seconds remaining, but two Marcus Nelson free throws gave Army a 25-23 halftime lead.
Nelson finished the game with a game-high four assists to go along with nine rebounds and four points. Bates added seven rebounds, as Army held a 39-36 edge on the glass.
Army shot 39.2 percent from the floor, while holding Navy to 28.6 percent shooting. The Midshipmen were able to knock down just 22.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half. While the contest was a defensive struggle thoughout, neither team turned the ball over very much. Army finished with eight miscues, while Navy had nine.
Sprink finished with a game-high 19 points, while Torpercer added 11 points. Stanton chipped in eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
After arriving at the arena, Crews changed out of his suit and into Army BDUs (battle dress uniform) to coach the game.
"I've been blessed since I've been coaching here to be around cadets and officers, so I wanted to honor them," remarked Crews.
Crews, who, along with several other Division I men's basketball coaches, spent a week this past summer in Kuwait coaching basketball to U.S. soldiers as part of Operation Hardwood, wanted to honor them as well.
"I wanted to honor all of the men and women in the military overseas, who do so much for us," added Crews. "This is my small way of letting them know that I remember them."
Army returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when the Black Knights travel to Easton, Pa., to take on Lafayette. The game is slated to tip off at 7 p.m

Canisius continued to riddle the Marist defense, though, and went up by as much as 13 right before the half before Farmer nailed a 3-pointer with 50 seconds to play to make the halftime margin 44-34.
The Golden Griffins began to cruise in the second half after Marist got within four points (48-44) one last time at the 14:55 mark on a layup by redshirt junior Ryan Stilphen, who made his return after missing two games with a sprained left knee.
