(Edison, N.J.) - Freshman forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) of the Marist women's basketball team was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the ninth time this season and the fifth consecutive week. Fitz averaged 18.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals as the Red Foxes went 2-0 last week. She shot .592 (16-for-27) from the field and .833 (5-for-6) from the free-throw line. Black Knights Crush Holy Cross
(West Point) – Army placed four starters in double figures and used a balanced attack to decisively defeat Holy Cross, 77-43, at Christl Arena on Tuesday evening in front of a national television audience. It was the fourth time this season the Black Knights have held an opponent to just 43 points, a season-low.
“We haven’t been playing our best basketball during the last couple of weeks, but I thought we had a really good game on Saturday against Colgate, and I think we really built on that tonight,” said head coach Dave Magarity. “I think that week off really helped us. It helped recharge and refocus us.
“I am so proud of how we defended tonight. Holy Cross is a great program and Bill Gibbons has been the best coach in this league since its induction. I think for us to go out and play that well, in a game when Holy Cross is playing great basketball, is a great tribute to our defense. We have a tremendous amount of respect for their program and their players. I think they have the best freshmen backcourt in the league and some of the best front line players in the league, but tonight we just clicked on all cylinders at both ends of the court.”
The biggest key to the Black Knights (20-4, 7-2) convincing win was their shooting. Army shot 60.8 (31-51) for the contest, while Holy Cross (9-15, 4-5) was just 16-for-50 (.320). Army established a new Christl Arena record for best field goal percentage with its .608. The previous record of .603 had been accomplished twice, with the last time coming Nov. 18, 2005 when the Black Knights were 44 of 73 (.603) against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Cara Enright led the Black Knights with 18 points and six rebounds, while Alex McGuire added 11 points, three assists and three steals. Megan Evans finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Stefanie Stone was the other Black Knight starter in double-digits with 10.
Magarity becomes just the third first-year head coach to reach the 20-win plateau, joining Harold Johnson (21-13, 1980-81) and Maggie Dixon (20-11, 2006-07). It also marks just the sixth time in Army’s 30-year history the Black Knights have reached 20 wins.
With Enright leading the charge with her five points, Army took a 16-8 lead at the 12:59 mark. Both teams dominated early from long range as Army sunk five three-point field goals, while Holy Cross nailed three three-pointers during the first 12:21 minutes of the game. Erin Begonia made two consecutive treys, giving Army the lead, 27-15, with 7:39 remaining in the first half.
Following a Margaree King jumper, Christy Cushnie made both free throw attempts to bring the Crusaders within 12, 29-17, at the 6:52 mark. Holy Cross would not score again for a little over four minutes, while Army jumped ahead, 38-17, its largest margin of the first stanza, with 2:52 remaining in the half.
The Black Knights went into the locker room leading by 20 points, 43-23, at the half. Army was 17-for-28 (.607) at the break, while Holy Cross was just 8 of 24 (.333). The Black Knights shut down the Crusaders inside game during the first half as five of their eight made field goals came from three-point range.
The second half began with the two teams going basket-for-basket, as Army held the lead, 53-32, at the 15:55 mark. Brittany Keil’s jumper at the 15:55 mark, that brought the Crusaders within 21, would be the last bucket for Holy Cross for 10:50, as the Crusaders went cold from the field. The Crusaders also committed seven of their 22 turnovers of the contest during that 10-minute period.
The Black Knights saw their lead balloon to 40, 72-32, with 6:20 remaining in the contest on a 19-0 spurt. It was part of a 29-9 run for the Black Knights to open the second half.
Ashley McLaughlin finally ended the Crusaders scoreless streak with a jumper with 5:05 remaining, and outscored the Black Knights 9-5 during the final 5:05 of the contest.
Jen Hansen added eight points and a team-leading four assists and six rebounds. King was a spark off the bench for Army finishing with nine points.
Keil was the only Crusader to reach double figures with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Army has now strung together five straight victories over Holy Cross, and has swept the season series with the Crusaders for the second straight year. Holy Cross’ 43 points were the fewest points scored in the 38-games series history.
Army begins a three-game road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 10, in Bethlehem, Pa., taking on Lehigh. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. and the game will be televised locally in the Lehigh Valley on Service Electric 2.

(New Paltz) - The SUNY New Paltz women's basketball team hosted the Oneonta Red Dragons this afternoon in a SUNYAC match-up and dropped a 79-69 decision. The Hawks led 12-6 at 13:50 in the first before Oneonta went on a 9-0 run for a 15-12 lead. The game was tied at 21 with 7:52 remaining, followed by a 14-6 by Oneonta to close out the half at 35-27. Oneonta opened the second half with a 15-4 run to extend their lead to 19 with 12:22 remaining. The Hawks closed the gap to eight at 77-69 but it was too late with only 20 seconds remaining in regulation.
Despite outrebounding Oneonta 39-26 and makinig 31 of 36 free throw attempts, New Paltz could not over come Oneonta's 54.9% shooting from the field.
Senior Kerri Kelty led the Hawks with 15 points, including hitting nine of ten from from the charity stripe. Junior Amber Sohns chipped in with 14 points. Carly Minehan finished with eight points and seven boards.
The Hawks fall to 13-7 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. SUNY New Paltz will return action on Friday Feb. 9th when they travel to Oswego to take on the Lakers.
Navy Ends Army's Winning Streak
(West Point) - Army had its 12-game winning streak snapped as arch-rival Navy hung on for the 49-44 victory on Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena. It also ended the Black Knights five-game winning streak over the Mids.
Army (17-3, 4-1 Patriot League) had not lost a contest since Seton Hall on Nov. 26, 2006. It also marked the conclusion of a nine-game home winning streak for the Black Knights, who had not lost at Christl Arena since the season opener against Ohio State. It marked Navy’s first win on the road during conference action and fourth overall this season, as the Mids improve to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
“I want to give Navy a tremendous amount of credit,” Army head coach Dave Magarity said. “I thought they (Navy) really executed well and made us chase them all night long. We didn’t do a good job. Our game plan was to switch on a lot of screens and our perimeter players just got a little behind, and we seemed to be trailing people by more than two steps at a time.”
After trailing by 10 at the 12:53 mark in the second half, Army went on a 16-6 run to tie the score at 44 on a Cara Enright lay-up with 2:14 remaining.
After a 30-second timeout, the Mids worked the ball inside to Kate Hobbs, who connected off glass with the shot clock winding down to give Navy the lead back, 46-44, with 1:39 remaining.
Enright attempted to put the Black Knights back on top with a three-point field goal, but her shot didn’t fall and Hobbs grabbed the rebound.
Kalen Kropa drove the baseline and hit a lay-up to give Navy a 48-44 lead with 20 seconds left. Alex McGuire tried to put Army back in the contest with 10 seconds remaining but her three-point attempt didn’t go in, and after Courtney Wright grabbed the rebound and kicked it back out to McGuire, her second shot didn’t fall either.
Margaret Knap made one of two free throws with one second on the clock to provide the final margin.
“Kate Hobbs killed us inside, and I thought their front line was huge for them,” Magarity said. They kept getting it inside and punishing us. And, when that didn’t happen, they hit a couple big perimeter shots, which kept the game out of reach for us. We made a great run and tied it up, but just ran out of gas tonight. We didn’t have enough in the tank offensively and couldn’t make big shots when we needed to.”
The two squads came out of the gates battling neck-and-neck, as Army and Navy played to three ties during the first 12 minutes. After Navy’s Carly Meyer tied the score, 16-16, at the 8:04 mark, Army held the Midshipmen scoreless for 3:44.
The Black Knights strung together an 8-0 during that span, as Army took its largest lead of the contest, 24-16, with 4:27 remaining in the first half. Stefanie Stone chipped in four points during the run, the only points on the afternoon for the junior forward.
Lindi Conner by a layup at the 4:20 mark, and the Mids closed the first stanza on a 7-0 run. Army saw its eight-point lead slip to one, as Army led 24-23 at the intermission.
Enright was Army’s leading scorer at the break with 11 points, while Hobbs added 11 for Navy.
Navy grew its advantage to eight, 32-24, at the 15:12 mark of the second half before Army scored its first point. McGuire finally nailed a jumper for the Black Knights to end a 9:33 drought. Army had not scored since Stone’s two free throws at the 4:27 mark of the first half.
The Mids largest lead, 38-28, came at the 12:53 mark as Kropa and Emily Cordle sunk back-to-back three-pointers. However, sparked by Margaree King’s four points, Army made a 7-2 run to close the gap to 40-35 with 8:59 remaining in the game, and forced Navy to call timeout.
The Black Knights continued to claw away at the Mids lead following the timeout, outscoring Navy 7-4, bringing Army within two, 44-42, at the 3:43 mark.
Army battled back to knot the score at 44 on a lay-up by Enright with 2:14 remaining, her only basket from the field during the second half.
Enright finished with 13 points and McGuire added eight. Wright led Army on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Hobbs finished with a double-double on game-highs in both points (17) and rebounds (11). Meyer, the Patriot League’s second-leading scorer, was held to just two points during the contest.
Army begins a two-game road swing at Lafayette on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m.

(Poughkeepsie) - Red-shirt junior center Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) led four Marist scorers in double digits with 15 points as the Red Foxes posted a 70-49 home victory over Iona in a battle between two teams which entered the day undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Marist won its sixth consecutive game to improve to 15-4 overall and 8-0 in the MAAC, while Iona fell to 12-7 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

Freshman forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) finished with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, falling just one rebound short of what would have been her third straight double-double. Nine of Fitz's points came in the second half. Red-shirt junior guard Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 11 and four assists, going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Eight of Viani's points came in the second half. Junior guard Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) finished with 10 and five rebounds. Senior point guard Alisa Kresge (Holmdel, N.J.) scored six points, tied her season high with seven rebounds, dished out seven assists and had zero turnovers. In the last two seasons against Iona, Kresge has 20 assists and just two turnovers.
Iona scored the first six points of the game, but Marist answered with a jumper by Flores to cut it to 6-2 at the 15:55 mark. Thirty-two seconds later, Flores was fouled shooting a three-pointer, and hit all three free throws to cut the Iona lead to 6-5. With 13:32 left in the first half, a three-pointer by Dahlman put the Red Foxes in the lead to stay.
With the Red Foxes leading 14-11, freshman forward Lynzee Johnson (Xenia, Ohio) scored eight consecutive Marist points in the span of 1:41 as Marist expanded its lead to nine. In that stretch, Johnson hit two three-pointers - the first time Johnson has hit two three-pointers in a game in her career.
Iona cut the Marist lead to 24-22 on two free throws by Jessica Anger, but Marist closed the half on a 7-0 in the final 2:57 to take a nine-point lead to the intermission. The Red Foxes expanded their lead to double digits when Viani hit three-pointers on the first two Marist possessions of the second half.
Two free throws by Iona's Martina Weber cut the Marist advantage to 53-44 with 7:39 remaining. From there, the Red Foxes closed the game on a 17-5 run.
Marist, which is ranked first in NCAA Division I women's basketball in turnovers per game, turned the ball over just seven times in the contest. Two of the turnovers occurred on the Red Foxes' first four possessions. Marist held Iona to 34.7 percent shooting from the field (17-for-49) and 12.5 percent shooting from three-point range (1-for-8).
Marist held Alumnae Day festivities prior to and during the game. An Alumnae Game was held prior to the Iona-Marist contest, and the returning alumnae were honored at halftime. The Marist women's basketball 1,000-point banner, consisting of 13 players, was unveiled, and the program honored the late Lynne Griffin, who is the school's all-time steals leader.
Marist will return to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes host Siena at 5 p.m. at the McCann Center as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.

(Poughkeepsie) - The Marist women's basketball team remained perfect in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Friday with a 73-34 home victory over Saint Peter's. Marist, which now stands at 14-4 overall and 7-0 in the MAAC, earned its fifth consecutive victory and 17th straight triumph at the McCann Center.
The Red Foxes held the Peahens to .180 shooting (9-for-50) from the field, and Saint Peter's hit just three of its 24 field-goal attempts in the second half. The .180 mark is the lowest the Red Foxes have permitted in Brian Giorgis' five years as head coach. Red-shirt junior center Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) led all scorers with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Dahlman shot 6-for-10 from the field and shot 2-for-3 from three-point range. Red-shirt sophomore guard Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) paced the Red Foxes with six assists. Marist jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead, but Saint Peter's scored eight consecutive points to tie the game. However, the Peahens did not take the lead at any point. With 5:35 left in the first half, a three-pointer by junior guard Courtney Kolesar (Concord, Ohio) started Marist on a 15-0 run, as the Red Foxes expanded their lead from seven to 22 heading into the intermission. Saint Peter's never got closer than 20 points in the second half.
Freshman guard Natasha Morris came off the bench to lead the Peahens with eight points. Senior forward Elyse Siciliano had a team-high nine rebounds for Saint Peter's to go along with seven points. The Peahens had just three assists in the game and committed 20 turnovers as they fell to 6-10 overall and 2-5 in the MAAC. It was the third time this season the Red Foxes did not allow a team to have one double-digit scorer in a game.
Marist has now won its last 19 home games against MAAC opponents. The Red Foxes have also tied their highest total of victories without a loss to start a conference season in program history; Marist started last season 7-0 in the MAAC as well. The 34 points permitted by the Red Foxes in tonight's game is tied for the second lowest total allowed under Brian Giorgis, and the ninth time Marist has held a team under 40 in the last five years. The Red Foxes also set a school record tonight by holding a fourth team under 40 points this season.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, when they host Iona at 2 p.m. At 7-0, the Gaels are the only other undefeated team in MAAC play. The contest will be broadcast locally on Time Warner Cable 6.
