Four Marist Men Win Titles
(West Point) - Ray Josephs (Rose Valley, Pa.) won championships at Third Flight Singles and Second Flight Doubles, leading a strong Marist effort at the West Point Open on Sunday. In addition to Josephs, Gregory Marks (Newburgh, N.Y.), Loic Sessegemin and Christian Coley (Cheshire, Conn.) won titles for the Red Foxes on the tournament's final day.
In Second Flight Doubles, Josephs and Marks posted an 8-4 victory over Chris Albornoz and Charles Mullenger of Army. Josephs captured the Third Flight Singles championship with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Binghamton's Alex Dobrin. Second Flight Singles was an all-Marist final, as Sessegemin topped Marks, 6-2, 6-1. Coley, who was playing in his first tournament this season after returning from injury, downed Colgate's Tyler Deck 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 in Fourth Flight Singles.
The Red Foxes will return to action next weekend, as they will participate in the Columbia University Winter Classic and Harvard Invitational.

Marist Players Reach Singles Finals
(West Point) - Five Marist men's tennis players advanced to the singles' finals on the second day of competition at the West Point Open on Saturday. Sunday's Second Flight final will feature an all-Marist match-up between Gregory Marks (Newburgh, N.Y.) and newcomer Loic Sessegemin, who is playing in his first tournament with the Red Foxes.
Marks advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over his opponent from Rutgers, and a 6-2, 7-5 win over his foe from Army. Sessegemin won both his matches in three sets, prevailing 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 over his opponent from Rutgers in round one, and then earning a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 10-5 triumph over his opponent from Binghamton to reach the final.
In the Third Flight, Ray Josephs (Rose Valley, Pa.) posted a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 11-9 triumph over his opponent from St. Joseph's in the first round and a 6-1, 6-4 win against a foe from Army in the semifinals. Christian Coley (Cheshire, Conn.) toppled his opponent from St. Joseph's, 3-6, 7-5, 12-10 in the first round before earning a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over his foe from Army in the semifinals in the Fourth Flight. In the Fifth Flight, Antonio Oliver (Madrid, Spain) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over a player from Colgate and a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 triumph against his opponent from St. Joseph's in the next round.
Sunday is the final day of competition at the West Point Open. It will consist of four singles matches and three doubles matches involving Marist players.

Army Falls to BC
(Chestnut Hill, Mass.) – The Army women’s tennis team lost to Boston College, 6-1, this afternoon at the Flynn Recreation Complex in Chesnut Hill, Mass.
The Black Knights (0-2) lost the doubles point and were only able to take one of the six singles points, avoiding their second consecutive shutout.
Brooke Jones was the lone victor for Army winning her match at No. 4 singles. The sophomore defeated Brittany Delaney, 7-5, ret., to claim the Black Knights’ lone point.
Army returns to action next weekend with a trip to Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Winter Invitational.

Army Falls to BU in Spring Debut
(Boston, Mass.) – The Army women’s tennis team opened its spring campaign on a losing note as Boston University swept all three doubles matches along with winning the six singles in straight sets en route to a 7-0 decision Saturday afternoon at the Track and Tennis Center in the spring debut for both teams.
Though BU swept all three doubles to pick up the first point of the match, the Terriers were hard-pressed to nail down wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Army’s tandem of Brooke Jones and Sarah Giles-Madden challenged Erin Katims and Liz Corrao before falling 8-6, while at No. 2, Niki Flach and Jessica Shurtz pushed BU’s duo of Katie Draganova and Danielle Abraham before bowing in a 9-7 tie-breaker.
Giles Madden was just as unrelenting in singles action where she pushed Yana Sanovskaya in the second set at No. 2 before bowing 6-4. Also challenging her opponent was freshman Paige Ford, who extended Katie Draganova being going down to a hard-fought 7-5 defeat in the first set at No. 6 singles.
The Black Knights, two-time defending Patriot League champions, will look to bounce back Sunday when they visit Boston College.

Women's Tennis Ranked in Northeast Region
(New Paltz) - The SUNY New Paltz women's tennis team was ranked 26th in the latest Northeast Region Poll by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Amherst and Williams were ranked 1-2. Sophomore Dana Lim earned an individual ranking of 26th in the singles bracket. Lim paired up with Eri Yamakawa in doubles to garner a 23rd place ranking.
Marist’s Williams Resigns As Interim Women’s Tennis Coach

(Poughkeepsie) - Marist interim women’s tennis coach Scott Williams has resigned his position, Director of Athletics Tim Murray announced Thursday.
Under the direction of Williams, Marist participated in four tournaments and one dual match in the 2006 Fall season. Freshmen Alexa Strange (Valencia, Calif.) and Cassie Strange (Valencia, Calif.) won doubles titles at the Cornell Tournament and Georgetown Invitational. Additionally, Mirelva Colon (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Emily Zampello (Kingwood, Texas) teamed up to win a consolation flight at the ECAC Championships. Colon also won the singles’ back draw at the Georgetown Invitational. The Red Foxes posted a 7-0 victory over Montreal on Oct. 7 in their lone dual match.

Algier, Doubles Team Advance For Marist
Frank Algier (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and the doubles team of Pedro Genovese (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Federico Rolon (San Diego, Calif.) have reached the championship finals of their respective flights at the Cornell Fall Indoor Invitational.
Algier, playing in Flight C, won two matches on Saturday to reach the final. He defeated Ashish Bhandari of Cornell, 6-2, 2-1, retired, and downed Colgate’s John Nogueras, 6-3, 6-2. Algier will face Cornell’s Bryant Yung in Sunday’s final.
In Flight A Doubles, Genovese and Rolon earned an 8-5 victory over Navy’s Adrian Lai and an 8-2 triumph over Cornell’s Kevin Jay and Peter Kung.
In other matches, Jeff Nguyen (San Diego, Calif.) reached the final of the Flight C Singles consolation round before falling. Nguyen defeated Colgate’s Michael Kodesch, 8-4, and Temple ’s Gonzalo De Villa, 8-1, but suffered an 8-6 loss to Army’s Bruno Lucivero.
Algier also teamed with Antonio Oliver (Madrid, Spain) in Flight B Doubles. The duo earned an 8-5 win over Lucivero and Johnny Lucero of Army, but suffered an 8-4 loss in the semifinals to Tongle Yu and Jonathan Fife of Cornell.
Oliver, playing in the Flight A Singles consolation round, posted an 8-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson’s Gabriel Lopez, but then dropped an 8-1 match to Temple ’s Nathan Spunda.
In Flight B Singles main draw action, Rolon dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to Yu of Cornell. Ray Josephs (Rose Valley, Pa.) dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Cornell’s Jay.

Josephs Wins Championship At Dartmouth Invitational
Senior Captures Flight B Singles
Senior Ray Josephs (Rose Valley, Pa. ) of the Marist men’s tennis team won the Flight B Singles championship at the Dartmouth Big Green Invitational on Monday. Josephs, the third seed, toppled fifth-seeded Kieran Burke of Harvard, 6-3, 6-4.
Josephs won four matches in three days to capture the title. He had also teamed up with Gregory Marks (Newburgh, N.Y.) to advance to the semifinals of the Doubles flight.
The tournament concludes the fall season for the Red Foxes. Marist will return to action at the Army Winter Tournament in January. Return to Top of Page
Women’s Tennis Competes At ITA Eastern Regional
Sarah Giles-Madden and Brooke Jones represented the Army women’s tennis team this weekend at the ITA Eastern Regional in Hanover, N.H. Giles-Madden competed in the singles draw then teamed with Jones for doubles play.
Giles-Madden was given a bye in the opening round, but then fell to Sasha Abraham of Penn State, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 64.
Giles-Madden and Jones faced the Rhode Island duo of Val Chacon and Lara Maurer in the first round. The Army tandem fell in a hard fought match, 8-5.
The Black Knights are now off until they open the spring portion of their schedule on Jan. 20, 2007. Army will kick-off its dual-match season with a trip to Boston University.

Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Play at ITA Regional
The Army men’s tennis team sent three representatives to the ITA Northeast Regional this weekend in Philadelphia, Pa.Michael Good, Kevin Harris and Sean Harris competed for the Black Knights matching wits against the top players in the region.
Good qualified for the main singles draw, but the senior fell in the opening round of 64 to to Guillaume St. Maurice of Penn State in, 6-4, 6-4.
Good teamed with Kevin Harris in the doubles draw. The Army duo was pitted opposite Penn State’s Michael James and Adam Slagter and lost in the first round, 8-3.
Kevin Harris and Sean Harris both participated in the qualifier earlier in the week and lost first round matches. Kevin slipped to Diego Alvarado of Manhattan in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, while Sean was beaten by Sam Wagner of Boston College, 6-4, 6-2.
Army concludes its fall slate next weekend in Ithaca, N.Y., at the Cornell Fall Invitational.

Marist’s Genovese, Rolon Fall At ITA Regionals
Duo Drops Match to Fourth-Seeded Team
Pedro Genovese ( Asuncion , Paraguay ) and Federico Rolon ( San Diego , Calif. ) of the Marist men’s tennis team suffered an 8-2 loss in the second round of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Men's Regional Championships on Saturday, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania .
Genovese and Rolon were defeated by the University of Pennsylvania ’s Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley, the fourth-seeded doubles team.
The Marist men’s tennis team will be back in action Friday through Sunday at the Cornell Fall Outdoor Invitational. Return to top of page
