
Raucci Named MAAC Indoor Track Performer Of The Week
(Edison, N.J.) - Marist sophomore David Raucci (Clermont, N.Y.) has been named MAAC Indoor Track Performer of the Week it was announced by the league office on Tuesday. This marks the first time in his young career Raucci has garnered an Indoor Track weekly honor.
Raucci was Marist's highest individual finisher on Friday on the first day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational held at the New York City Armory. He ran to a six place finish in the 5,000-meters, posting a time of 14:58.67. His time is the fastest by any Marist runner in the 5,000 so far this season.
Raucci and the rest of the Red Foxes will return to action this Friday when they travel to Boston University for the St. Valentine Invitational.

Two Army Tracksters Earn Patriot League Weekly Honors
(West Point) – Army junior Steve Zhan was named the Patriot League “Male Field Performer of the Week” and freshman Angela Jenkins was named the “Female Rookie of the Week” following impressive performances over the weekend at the non-scoring Carleton Crowell Open hosted by the Black Knights at Gillis Field House.
Both met postseason standards in their respective events. Zhan’s winning effort of 47 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump, which was just over three inches shy of his career mark, met the IC4A qualifying mark.
The Army men captured five of the 19 events along with eight runner-up finishes and five third-place performances to dominate the 14-team field.
On the women’s side, Jenkins ushered in her collegiate career by meeting the ECAC qualifying standard in the triple jump with her winning effort of 38 feet, 6 ¼ inches. She also finished second in the long jump (18-6 ½) en route to writing her name into Army’s Top 10 list in both events, ranking fourth in the triple jump and standing ninth in the long jump.
It is the second weekly citation for the freshman from Staunton, Va., who was the Army Athletic Association’s “Co-Athlete of the Week” with women’s basketball player Cara Enright.
Earning Patriot League honorable mention honors were juniors Kim Maxwell and Brandon Lewis. Maxwell took third in the pentathlon and Lewis finished second in the heptathlon at the Crowell Open.
The Army track and field teams are back in action this weekend, hosting the Black Knight Invitational at Gillis Field House on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Butler Shines for Red Foxes at Invitational
(New York) - Freshman Everett Butler (Windsor, CT), sprinting in his first collegiate meet, broke the school record twice in the 60-meter dash to lead a strong early-season showing for the Marist College men's track team at the Fordham Invitational, held Friday night at the New Balance Track and Field Center.
In the trials of the 60 dash, Butler sprinted to a time of 7.21 seconds, narrowly eclipsing 2006 graduate Rob DeAngelo's previous mark of 7.22 seconds, which was set in 2003. Butler had the fifth-fastest qualifying time, which earned him a spot in the finals. In the finals, the speedster improved his new school record to 7.15 seconds and placed sixth overall.
Freshman Max Carow (Fanwood, NJ) also had a strong collegiate debut. Competing in the pole vault, Carow was 10th with a leap of 3.80 meters. That jump is just shy of the 9-year-old school record of 3.90 meters, held by 2001 graduate Seth Tyminski.
Senior captain Brian DeMarco (Whippany, NJ), who missed most of last winter with a pulled hamstring, started off 2007 with a solid effort in the 400-meter dash. He was fifth overall in 50.13 seconds, less than a half-second off his 2-year-old school record in that event. Fellow senior captain Patrick Carroll (Honeoye Falls, NY) notched a personal-best time of 51.50 in the 400 dash.
Both came back later in the evening for a scintillating 1,600-meter relay. DeMarco anchored with a 49.5-second split to win the heat in a dramatic finish. The team of junior Shaun Kippins (Latham, NY), senior captain Mike Bamberger (East Northport, NY), Carroll and DeMarco finished fifth overall in a solid early-season time of 3:25.61. Kippins had a busy evening, as he also competed in the long jump and the triple jump. He made finals in the triple jump and placed eighth in 13.04 meters.
Junior Mike Rolek (Maplewood, NJ) had the highest finish for the Red Foxes, placing second in the 5,000-meter run in 15:35.89. Fellow cross country teammate David Raucci (Clermont, NY) scored in the mile run, posting a 6th-place time of 4:23.53. Raucci, the school record-holder in the mile, later anchored the seventh-place 3,200-meter relay team.
A full Red Foxes squad will return to action on Friday night for the NYC Gotham Cup, hosting by NYU at the New Balance Track and Field Center.

Men Dominate Crowell Open
(West Point) - The Army men’s track and field team opened its 2007 indoor campaign in decisive fashion by dominating the non-scoring Carleton Crowell Open Saturday afternoon at Gillis Field House. The Black Knights captured five of the 19 events along with eight runner-up finishes and five third-place performances.
Junior Steve Zhang met the IC4A qualifying standard with his winning effort of 47 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump, which is just over three inches shy of his career best. Senior Rudy Meja joined Zhang in the winners’ circle in the field events after clearing 23 ¾ in the long jump.
In the running events, Justin Kelso beat the field in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.30 seconds, Robert Squier led a one-two finish in the 5000-meter run with his clocking a 15:27.16, and Doug Pelletier crossed first in the 3000-meter run in 8:58.82.
Senior Kevin Filer turned in a pair of runner-up finishes in the field events, setting a personal best in the 35-lb weight (53-3 3/4), along with a 49-9 ¼ in the shot put. Brandon Lewis finished second in the heptathlon, which was concluded Saturday morning, with a score of 4,540 points, while Reagan Rafferty just missed tying his career high by one-quarter inch after clearing 6-8 in the high jump to earn runner-up honors.
Posting second-place efforts in the running events were Dan McLeod, 400-meter dash (50.80); Adrian Perkins, 500-meter dash (1:04.70); John Mickowski, mile run (4:19.96); and Andrew Catalano, 5000-meter run (15:46.44).
Finishing third in their respective events were John Laird, 60-meter dash (6.70); Alexander Ralston, 800 meter run (2:03.00); Stephen Kraus, 1000-meter run (2:33.50); Kirk Chitwood, 3000-meter run (9:24.14); and Ken Saffold, long jump (22-6).
Army returns to action Saturday, Jan. 13, hosting the Black Knight Invitational at Gillis Field House with competition beginning at 11 a.m.

Army Women Turn In Strong Performance
(West Point) - Freshman Angela Jenkins shined in the jumping events in her first collegiate meet in helping the Army women’s track and field team to a solid performance in the season-opening Carleton Crowell Saturday afternoon at Gillis Field House.
Jenkins cleared 38 feet, 6 ¼ inches to capture the triple jump after a second-place finish of 18-6 ½ in the long jump. Her mark in the triple jump ranks fourth on Army’s Top 10 list and also met the ECAC qualifying standard, while her performance in the long jump stands ninth.
Junior Nicole Brechue rounded out Army’s individual winners in the shot put, which she captured with a heave of 41-11 ¼. Also joining the winners’ circle was Army’s 4x800-meter relay team that combined for a time of 10:28.20.
Turning in second-place efforts in the running events were Tyfani Hulse and Ebony Thomas, who crossed together in a time of 26.20 seconds in the 200 dash; Katelin Grant, 400 dash (59.90); Megan Curran, 3000-meter run (10:50.67); and Jennifer Glover, 60-meter hurdles (9.10).
Posting third-place showings were Toni Oestmann, 800-meter run (2:27.20); Andrea Filozof, 5000-meter run (19:57.31); and Ellen Sutey, high jump (4-11 ¾), who edged out teammate Kim Maxwell for that spot on fewer misses.
Army returns to action next Saturday, Jan. 13, hosting the Black Knight Invitational at Gillis Field House with competition beginning at 11 a.m.

Lewis Is First Day Leader
(West Point) - Army’s Brandon Lewis is the leader and teammate David Brown is in third place after the first four events of the heptathlon contested during the first day of the Carleton Crowell Open in the Black Knights’ men’s track and field indoor debut. Lewis captured the first two events and was second in the final two en route to outdistancing the field with 2,852 points.
Lewis tied with Binghamton’s Jimmy Massar for medalist honors in the opening 60-meter dash as both posted identical times of 7.24 seconds. Lewis beat the field in the long jump after leaping 22 feet, 9 ¼ inches, was runner-up in the shot put (37-8), and shared second-place honors with Brown in the high jump as both cleared 6-1 ¼ in the day’s final event.
Brown, compiling 2,603 points, tied with Hasani Hampden (currently in second place with 2,668 points) for second place in the 60 dash after crossing in 7.44. The native of El Paso, Texas, who trails Hampton by 68 points, was third in the long jump (20-6 ¼) and shot put (36-4 ¾).
Freshman Adam Schwarz made his collegiate debut competing in three of the events, with his best showing in the shot put where he finished fourth with a heave of 35-10.
The Carleton Crowell Open continues Saturday with the remaining three events – 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run - scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The rest of the meet will start at noon.
Albany, Binghamton, Bronx CC, City College of New York, Connecticut, Delhi, Dutchess CC, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehman, Mohawk Valley CC. St. Joseph’s, St. Thomas Aquinas, Seton Hall, Stevens Institute of Technology, USMAPS and Westchester Track Club join Army at the Open.
