Hawks Down Bearcats 3-0

The SUNY New Patlz men's volleyball team hosted the Baruch tonight and swept the Bearcats 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-24). The first game was a back and forth battle with several lead changes and the last tie coming at 27-27. Game two saw the Hawks ahead 26-21 before Baruch went on a run and tied the game at 27-27, before Baruch hit an attempt out of bounds, followed a New Paltz kill for the 29-27 lead. New Paltz then was called for a tip which dropped the lead to one before Josh Spiro ended the game with a kill. New Paltz controlled the third game with an early 15-7 lead and never looked back.

Spiro paced the attack for the Hawks with 12 kills and eight blocks. Jeff Lee finished with nine kills and 11 digs, while Christopher Holden added nine kills and six block assists. Pedro Medina collected 24 digs and Matt Weingarten handed out 33 assists.

SUNY New Paltz advances to 9-3 on the season and will return to action on Friday when they travel to Stevens Institute of Technology to take on the Ducks. Earlier in the season the Hawks fell to the Ducks 3-0.  Return to Top of Page

Men's Volleyball Continues Play at Nazareth Tournament

The SUNY New Paltz men's volleyball team continued play in the Nazareth Invitational today. The Hawks faced Endicott and won 3-2 after dropping the first two games (29-31, 22-30, 30-25, 30-23, 15-11). The Hawks then faced Eastern Mennonite and lost 3-2. No individual stats were made available at this time.

Men's Volleyball Goes 1-1 at Nazareth

The SUNY New Paltz men's volleyball team traveled to Rochester today for the Nazareth Tournament. The Hawks went 1-1 on the day, falling to D'Youville and defeating Johnson and Wales. The Hawks claimed the first two games against D'Youville before dropping the next three (30-25, 30-17, 18-30, 24-30, 11-15). The second match of the day the Hawks swept Johnson and Wales 3-0 (30-20, 30-17, 30-12). No individual stats were made available. The Hawks will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Endicott at 12 noon.

Hawks Soar Past Raptors 3-0

(New Paltz) - The SUNY New Paltz men's volleyball team hosted the Bard Raptors tonight and soared to a 3-0 victory. The Hawks lead the way through game one and two, claiming game one 30-22 and game two 30-25. In the third game Bard was ahead 19-11 before New Paltz fought back to even the score at 23-23 after a block by Jacob Moore and a service ace by Matt Weingarten. The Hawks then went on a 7-2 run to end the game 30-25. Senior Joshua Spiro led the attack with 12 kills on 20 attempts and collected 10 blocks for the Hawks. First year Tyler Collison finished with 10 kills and 13 digs. Jeff Lee collected nine kills, 13 digs and Pedro Medina recorded 21 digs. Weingarten dished out 37 assists as the Hawks advance to 6-1 on the season.

Holden Named NECVA Rookie of the Week

(New Paltz) - First year middle hitter, Christopher Holden (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) was named the North Eastern College Volleyball Association (NECVA) Rookie of the Week. This is the first honor of the 2007 year and included all games played through Feb. 4th. Holden has led the Hawks to a 5-1 record overall and 3-1 in the Metro Division. He has tallied 63 kills on 101 attempts for a .465 hitting percentage and has collected 31 blocks.

New Paltz Defeats Ramapo & Polytechnic

(Mahwah, NJ) - The SUNY New Paltz Hawks claimed two victories today to advance to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The Hawks faced off against Ramapo in the first match and claimed a 3-0 sweep. New Paltz put down 14 kills on 25 attempts with three errors hitting, .440 to go up one game to none on Ramapo, 30-21. Joshua Spiro and Christopher Holden each recorded four kills for the Hawks while Matthew Weingarten dished out 12 assists.

Ramapo dropped game two to the Hawks after Jeff Lee put down five kills leading New Paltz to a 30-26 victory. Weingarten dished out 11 assists and Lee led the defense with three digs. New Paltz went 13-30 with six errors, .233.

The Roadrunners fought back from behind in game three but fell short, 31-33. In game three, Lee led the Hawks with seven kills and Weingarten dished out 18 assists while the team posted 19 kills on 39 attempts with eight errors, .282. Ramapo hit 22-40 with eight errors going .350 in the loss.

On the day, the Hawks were led by Lee with 14 kills and Holden added nine of his own. Weingarten dished out 41 assists in the win. The team went 46-94 with 17 errors hitting .309.

In second match of the day, New Paltz faced off with Polytechnic in the second match of the day posting a 3-2 (30-32, 30-20, 30-23, 26-30, 15-4) victory to improve to 5-1 overall, 3-1 NECVA Metro. The Hawks hit .248 in the win behind Michael O’Brien’s 13 kills and three blocks. Jacob Moore posted 12 kills and Michael Fink added ten of his own. Mark Blair recorded ten kills in the win and rookie setter Stephen Pendleton dished out a team high 32 assists. Moore and Pendleton recorded seven blocks each.

SUNY New Paltz will return to action on Wednesday February 7th when they host Bard at 7 p.m.

Men's Volleyball Defeats New Haven, 3-1

(West Haven, CT) - Christopher Holden had 21 kills on .455 hitting to lead the SUNY New Paltz men's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over the University of New Haven at Charger Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Hawks prevailed by scores of 30-27, 26-30, 30-28 and 30-28.

New Paltz improves to 3-3 this season with the victory, and they handed the Chargers (2-1) their first loss this season.

Holden was one of four New Paltz players with double-figure kill totals. Joshua Spiro had 11 kills on .375 hitting, and Alex Jackson had 10 kills on .381 hitting. Jeff Lee had 10 kills and eight digs, while Matt Weingarten had a match-high 51 assists.

For the Chargers, it was junior Drew Kirkeby leading the way with 24 kills on .348 hitting despite playing with an upset stomach. Chris Lennon had 18 kills on .324 hitting and added eight digs, while Tommy Musto had 11 digs and six kills.

Setter Kevin Goncalves had 48 assists, seven kills and five block assists.

The Hawks return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Ramapo to play the Roadrunners at 12 p.m. and then face off against Polytechnic Institute at 2 p.m.

Coyle Makes Division III Hitting Percentage List

(New Paltz) - First year Brittany Coyle was ranked 41st for Division III NCAA Women's Volleyball Hitting Percentage.

Coyle finished the 2006 season with 248 kills on 603 attacks for a .347%. She was one of five first year players to make the top 50 list and she tallied the fewest errors with only 39.

Bucknell Defeats Army, 3-1, In Patriot League Tournament

The Army volleyball team ended its 2006 campaign on a disappointing note, falling 3-1 (30-28, 30-18, 27-30, 30-26) to Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals Friday evening at Bender Arena.

The Black Knights, who were the No. 2 seed in the tournament, end their season with a record of 21-8, while the third-seeded Bison (20-11) advance to the conference title match against top seed and regular season champion American on Saturday night.

Sophomore Jamie Clark tallied a career-high 21 kills and eight digs for the Black Knights, while fellow first team all-league selection Elizabeth Lazzari finished with 15 kills and 20 digs. Freshman Maureen Bannon charted 52 assists, a personal-best 19 digs and two kills. Seniors Danielle Cooper and Eileen Cassidy concluded the Army careers, Cooper with 11 kills, six digs and four blocks, and Cassidy notching 13 digs.

Bucknell finished with three players in double figures as Emilie Hardinge tallied 16, Jenna Henderson had 15, and Sarah Gromas added 11. Kristen Sydlowski tallied a match-high 27 digs, and Shannon Pitsch recorded the only Bison double-double with 45 assists and 18 digs

Six Red Foxes Named To The MAAC All-Academic Team

Marist finished season 11-19

The Marist Volleyball team had six members named to the 2006 MAAC All-Academic Team it was announced on Sunday morning. Niagara led the MAAC win nine members earning academic honors, followed by Marist and Saint Peter’s with six each.

Those honored by the MAAC from Marist were, Christy Lukes (Mesa, Ariz./Communications), Kim McEathron (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Environmental Science & Policy), Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas/Business/Finance), Jordan Rowe (Friendswood, Texas/Communications), Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio/Communications) and Jackie Ugrinovsky (Paramus, N.J./Communications). To earn the All-Academic honor a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Marist finished the 2006 season with an 11-19 record overall and 8-10 mark in MAAC play. Return to Top of Page

Red Foxes Drop Heartbreaker To Iona 3-2

Kenworthy records double-double in career finale

The Marist Women’s Volleyball team’s season came to a heartbreaking end on Friday after a 3-2 loss to Iona in the MAAC Tournament. Senior captain Jaime Kenworthy posted a double-double for the Foxes, recording a match high 24 kills and a team high 23 digs. Scores of the match were 30-22, 26-30, 29-31, 30-14 and 15-17 in favor of the Gaels.

Kenworthy was one of three Red Foxes in double figures in kills, with Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) recording 15 and senior Sally Hanson (Guerneville, Calif.) posting 14. Hanson led the Foxes in hitting percentage, registering a .353 mark. Freshman setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) totaled 55 assists in the match.

Kenworthy also led Marist in digs with 23. She was one of four to post 10-plus digs and one of two to record at least 20. Schultze posted 20 on the afternoon, while Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas) followed with 19 and Kim McEathron (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) finished with 11. Christy Lukes (Mesa, Ariz.) and Jackie Poston (Huntingtown, Md.) led Marist with five total blocks each, while Hanson finished with four on the afternoon.

Iona featured a balanced attack that saw three Gaels reach double digit kills, led by Sarah Wiener with 18. She was followed by Megan Dailey and Kristin Allain with 17 and 12, respectively. Five Gaels reached at least 10 digs, with Shelby Erb posting a match high 25. Alyssa Morales posted a team high five blocks and a match high 58 assists for Iona in the win.

2006 was a historic year for the Foxes as Kenworthy and Hanson became the first two players in Marist history to record 1,000 kills, while Hanson became the career leader in service aces, finishing with 168.

Marist Falls To Manhattan In First Round Of MAAC Tournament

Foxes play at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in consolation match

The Marist Women’s Volleyball team fell 3-0 to Manhattan (13-19, 9-9 MAAC) in the first round of the MAAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon. Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas) totaled 12 digs in the match for the Foxes. Scores of the match were 24-30, 19-30 and 21-30 in favor of the Jaspers.

Offensively for Marist, freshman Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) totaled seven kills in the match, while Sally Hanson (Guerneville, Calif.) and Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, Pa.) followed with six and five, respectively. Junior Christy Lukes (Mesa, Ariz.) also recorded six kills on the afternoon and led Marist in hitting percentage with a .357 clip. Freshman setter Dawn Jan posted 22 assists for the Foxes.

On the defensive side, Miksch’s 12 digs were a team high, while Kenworthy finished the afternoon with nine. Schultze and Jan each totaled eight digs apiece for Marist. Lukes would post a team high four total blocks, while Jackie Poston (Huntingtown, Md.) followed with three.

Manhattan was led by two players with double figure kills in Whitney Judkins with 16 and Kandice Watson with 11. Setter Alyssa Getzel finished with a match high 43 assists, while Ashley Watson paced everyone with a match high in digs with 20. Rita Welsh led four Jaspers with multiple blocks with a match high six.

The loss drops Marist to 11-18 overall on the season. The Red Foxes will be back in action on Friday afternoon in a consolation match scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. Return to Top of Page

Marist Volleyball Rolls On Senior Day

Red Foxes Cruise To 3-0 Victory Over Manhattan

(Poughkeepsie) - The Marist women’s volleyball team closed out its regular season with a 3-0 victory over Manhattan on Senior Day at the McCann Center on Sunday. The Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 30-26, 30-26, 30-24 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest.

Playing her final match at the McCann Center , senior outside hitter Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, Pa.) totaled team-bests with 20 kills and 16 digs. Kenworthy hit .385 for the match.

Senior libero Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas) added 14 digs for the Red Foxes. Freshman outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) finished with nine kills, five digs and three aces. Senior middle blocker Sally Hanson (Guerneville, Calif.) had six kills and six blocks. Freshman setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) tallied 36 assists.

Rita Welsh led Manhattan in kills with 12, and Whitney Judkins had 11. Ashley Watson finished with 14 digs, and Alyssa Getzel had 31 assists.

Marist closed out its regular season with a record of 11-17, and 8-10 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will have the fifth seed in the MAAC Championships, which begin on Thursday in Orlando, Fla. On Thursday, the Red Foxes will have a rematch against Manhattan in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. The fifth-place finish in the best in the Red Foxes’ 10 years in the conference.

The Red Foxes’ victory avenged a 3-2 loss to Manhattan on Sept. 30. Marist’s last three victories have all come by a 3-0 score.

Hawks Fall in ECAC Finals 3-2 to U of R

The SUNY New Paltz Hawks fell to the University of Rochester 3-2 in the ECAC Championship Finals Saturday night. The Hawks finish their season at 26-12.

The Hawks claimed game one 30-28 and game four 30-17, while U of R claimed games two (30-16), three (32-30) and five (15-4). Senior Kim Clouston led the way for the Hawks with 21 kills and 21 digs. Sophomore Nicole Mercadante finished with 42 digs and first year Lauren Hogue collected 26 digs for the Hawks. Amanda Brown recorded 16 kills and first year Brittany Coyle added 12 kills. Junior Katie Becofsky dished out 59 assists and senior Kate Roche totaled six blocks. Return to Top of Page

Hawks Advance to ECAC Finals

The SUNY New Paltz Hawks defeated the second seed RIT Tigers 3-2 on Saturday in the semifinals of the ECAC Championship Tournament. The Hawks will face the winner of the University of Rochester/SUNY Oneonta semifinal match-up at 5 pm tonight.

SUNY New Paltz claimed game one 30-25. The score was tied 17-17 before the Hawks went on a four point run behind the serving of senior Franchesca Rodriguez to open up the game. In game two the Hawks won a 30-24 decision behind the blocking of senior Kate Roche.

In the third game the Hawks were up 16-11 before the Tigers tied the game at 18-18 and took the lead to 29-25 before the Hawks battled back to tie the game 29-29. It was a back and fourth fight before the Tigers won 34-32.

The Tigers took the fourth game 30-24. The score was tied 15-15 before RIT went on a four point run to make it 19-15. The Hawks soon made their own run to even the game again but were outscored 11-5 to end the game.

SUNY New Paltz dominated the fifth game in a convincing 15-4 showing. The Hawks pushed off of first year Lauren Hogue's serves and take a quick 6-0 lead and controlled play the rest of the game. Senior Kim Clouston led the Hawks with 19 kills, 14 digs and Rodriguez finished with 15 kills, 13 digs. Roche totaled 10 blocks, eight kills and first year Brittany Coyle added nine blocks, eight kills. Sophomore Amanda Brown recorded 10 kills, 19 digs and classmate Nicole Mercanadte finished with 39 digs. Junior Katie Becofsky handed out 51 assists for the Hawks. Return to Top of Page

Women's Volleyball Advances to ECAC Semifinals

The third seeded SUNY New Paltz women's volleyball team traveled to Rochester for ECAC tournament and faced sixth seed Russell Sage Friday night at the University of Rochester.

The Hawks swept the Gators 30-24, 30-18, 30-26. In game one the score was tied seven times with the last one coming at 17-17 before the Hawks took the lead for good. The largest lead was after a four point run by New Paltz at 29-22.

Game two saw the Hawks command play after a four point run behind the serving of senior Jenn Hembury to take the lead at 12-7 as New Paltz never looked back. Their largest lead came at 28-14 before closing out the game. In the final game New Paltz took the lead for good at 9-8. The Hawks were up by seven points six time throughout the game before the Gators battled back to within two at 28-26 but it wasn't enough as New Paltz swept the match.

Clouston led the way for the Hawks with 15 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore Amanda Brown finished with 11 kills, 11 digs. Nicole Mercandante collected a team high 17 kills and junior Katie Becofsky dished out 33 assists.

Marist Falls In Three Games At Siena

Kenworthy posts nine kills, 14 digs

The Marist Volleyball team dropped a three set decision at Siena (18-12, 14-3 MAAC) on Thursday night. Senior captain Jaime Kenworthy ( Aston , Pa. ) posted a team high nine kills and a match high 14 digs in the match. Scores for the match were 20-30, 21-30 and 26-30 in favor of the Saints.

Kenworthy was followed in kills by freshman Alexandra Schultze ( Austin , Texas ) who recorded eight to go along with five digs and two total blocks. Sally Hanson ( Guerneville , Calif. ) added seven kills, four digs and two total blocks in the match for the Red Foxes. Junior Christy Lukes ( Mesa , Ariz. ) recorded a match high five total blocks for Marist, while freshman setter Dawn Jan ( Belleville , N.J.) totaled 27 assists.

Siena had three record double figures in kills, led by Christie Gustafson who had 14. Gustafson was also one of four Saints with ten-plus digs with her 10. April London recorded a match high 40 assists for Siena in the win.

With the loss, Marist falls to 10-17 overall on the season and 7-10 in MAAC play. Marist will close out the regular season on Sunday when it hosts Manhattan at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the match Marist will honor six seniors who will play their final match at the McCann Center . Return to Top of Page

Marist Volleyball Signs Three To National Letters Of Intent

Hanna brings in three to the class of 2007

(Poughkeepsie) - Marist head volleyball coach Tom Hanna announced the signing of three to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. 5-1 setter/libero Amber Lopez (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), 6-1 outside hitter Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich./Northville) and 5-11 middle blocker Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas/Westwood) will all join the Red Foxes as part of the recruiting class of 2007.

Foss will come to Poughkeepsie after a successful high school and club career in Michigan. Her senior season has not begun yet, but Foss was named All-Area, All-Division and All-Region as a junior at Northville High in 2005-06. Foss was also named Academic All-State as a junior. She played her club volleyball for M Juniors which is the sister club of Premier Volleyball Club which Marist signee Amber Lopez plays for.

Coach Hanna On Foss: “Joanna will add size to our outside hitter position. She has a live arm, which will only become stronger over the coming years. With another year of training with M Juniors still ahead of her, Joanna will make tremendous strides before she arrives on campus.”

Lopez will come to Poughkeepsie after a successful high school career at Perrysburg. Lopez was named First Team All-League and was an honorable mention All-District player in 2005 as a junior. As a sophomore in 2004, Lopez garnered honorable mention All-League honors for Perrysburg. In her career, Lopez holds the Perrysburg school record in assists in a match, season and career. This season Lopez was named All-League and All-District and will also participate in the Ohio All-Star game. Lopez has also helped Perrysburg to the Ohio State Final Four in her senior season.

Coach Hanna on Lopez: “We’re excited to have such an athletic player with a great volleyball background in Amber. Her training and experience with Premier Volleyball Club is exactly what our program needs. She provides us with quality and depth at the setting position and quite possibly could be our libero of the future.”

Schmid will join the Red Foxes out of Westwood High, where she was named All-District in 2005 as a junior. She also played club volleyball for Austin Juniors, which was the club team of current Marist players Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas) and Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas).

Coach Hanna on Schmid: “The addition of Lindsey to our program brings us a middle blocker that can play fast and also has a high level of training coming in. We’re extremely excited to have another player in our program from Austin Juniors.”

Marist stands a 10-16 overall on the season and 7-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.   Return to Top of Page

Clouston and Coyle Earn New York All-Region Honors

(New Paltz) - Senior outside hitter Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) was named to the NCAA Division III All-New York Region Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and first year middle hitter Brittany Coyle (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) earn honorable mention honors.

This is the first time either player has received the award as a member of the Hawks. Clouston was one of 12 members on the team out of the 59 New York Region teams and Coyle was one of six honorable mention selections. Clouson, was named to the All-SUNYAC first team, is averaging 3.45 digs and 3.33 kills per game this season. Coyle who was selected as the SUNYAC East Division Rookie of the Year has accumulated 2.41 kills per game and a .369 attack percentage in 31 matches for the Hawks.
